Sexual harassment in the workplace is very serious and unacceptable in all workplaces in the United States. People should be able to show up to work without the fear of someone sexually harassing them. “Sexual harassment of men occurs, even though there is less information about the problem because men are less likely to report the behavior.” (workharassment.net). Aside from sexual harassment there are workplace affairs. There are good relationships in the workplace and there are bad relationships in the workplace. How can victims of workplace sexual harassment stop inappropriate behavior? What is classified as a good workplace relationship and what is bad? In my article I will discuss sexual harassment in the workplace and what you can do when you feel harassed. Additionally, I will discuss the good and bad of workplace relationships. Workplace sexual harassment is defined as “offensive or pervasive workplace conduct related to a person's sex that adversely affects a reasonable person's employment.” (aauw.org) Sexual Harassment violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 because it is a form of sexual discrimination. According to aauw.org, Title VII is “a federal law that prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, and religion and applies to employers with 15 or more employees, including federal, state , and local governments”. Actions victims can take are to speak to the individual, file a complaint against the individual, file discrimination charges against the individual, and sue for emotional or physical injuries they may be suffering from. There are many benefits to workplace relationships, such as increased teamwork, productivity, lower turnover rates, and higher employee retention rates. All problems within an employment relationship should be left outside the organization to avoid tensions between other members of staff.
