IntroductionEnergy is a precious source for people all over the world and, over time, we have become very dependent on fossil fuels. Fossil fuels include coal, oil, and natural gas. While these resources are abundant, they will not always be readily available to us. That's why we need to start looking for other renewable resources that can create more energy. Biomass is a very important renewable resource and has the potential to be our gateway to a cleaner future. What is biomass? According to Conserve Energy Future, biomass is the energy contained in plants and animals. This includes organic matter from plants, animals, and other waste products from organic sources. The process of photosynthesis begins with chlorophyll present in plants absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and water from the soil. This energy is then transferred to animals once the plant is eaten by them. Biomass is considered a renewable energy source because the carbon dioxide and water contained within plants and animals are released into the atmosphere when burned. Large quantities of biomass are also able to regenerate within the period of use. According to UCSUSA, most scientists believe that a wide range of biomass resources are very beneficial because they will reduce overall carbon emissions along with many other benefits. Biomass sources include: crops, manure, trees, along with waste and residues. Biomass Sources Crops, also known as energy crops, can be grown on farms in large quantities. Some may see crops as a waste of land, but energy crops can be grown in a way that does not displace or reduce food production. Energy crops can be grown on marginal lands, pastures or... middle of paper... to consume more. To harvest enough wood to power a nation full of vehicles or multiple power plants, companies would have to clear much of the forest. Clearing more forest area can also affect the ecosystem and destroy many plant and animal homes. Conclusion After looking more deeply into biomass, it seems that this renewable resource could be very useful in the future. Biomass is used in new and advanced ways to produce energy. This has inspired Canada and other areas around the world to improve the biomass energy sector. Today we rely so much on fossil fuels. Eventually these sources will run out and we will have to find an alternative. While biomass presents some challenges, it is still an important renewable resource for America's transition to a clean energy future. If developed properly, biomass can produce large quantities of bioenergy.
