In my hometown, people don't have much extra money to spend. Most children have the bare minimum. The vast majority of my community is Hispanic and football is a big deal at the high school level. Every kid grows up wanting to play for their high school team. I was at home visiting some friends when we decided to go to the football field. We had been filming for about half an hour when some younger guys arrived. I didn't know them, but my friends did. We toured with them and played a few world cup matches. That's when I noticed one of the guys had holes in his cleats. It was starting to get dark and the boys said they had to go home. After they left I asked my friends about the boy with the holes in his shoes. They said his family was new to the area and didn't have much money. I learned that the boy's name was Guillermo. I was amazed at how good Guillermo was at soccer without playing for a club team. Most people don't know that football is an expensive sport. I got home and couldn't stop thinking about Guillermo and his cleats. The next day, I decided to go buy new Guillermo cleats. The only problem was that I didn't know what size to get. I called my friends and told them what I wanted to do, they thought it was a good idea and wanted to help me. One of my friends knew the family and asked if Guillermo wanted to come with us to Salem. We brought his little brother with us so it wouldn't be weird. We took the Guillermo to Dicks sporting goods store. I told Guillermo to pick out all the new cleats he wanted, his eyes got big and he had the biggest smile on his face. I told him he can't be on the high school team with holes in his shoes. Tried on fewer than five pairs of shoes... middle of paper... sorry, it makes a difference to me. I like to think that my friends and I also taught Guillermo the kindness of strangers. Our community is very close-knit and I like to think we've made Guillermo feel more at home. This experience learning popcorn theory has had a major impact on how I view helping people. I can do simple things to help people and you never know how much impact you could have on someone else. In the future I intend to help as many people as possible. In particular I intend to continue helping Guillermo. I believe Guillermo has a very bright future and I want to help him understand that there is more to life than just our city. That there's more to it than finishing high school and going to work for a cannery or lumberyard. He has so many possibilities playing football. He could make a better life for himself and his family.
