With the costs of incarceration rising, new alternatives are emerging, one of the most popular being public shaming. Public shaming should not be considered appropriate for any crime that could result in a short prison sentence. Public shaming can cause so much emotional damage to someone, and no one should feel such incredible humiliation or self-hatred. People who endure public shaming can't bear to live with themselves sometimes because it might lead them to do something irrational. Public shaming is sometimes not even a punishment for some, if someone commits a crime they should also serve their sentence. Public shaming can have serious consequences if given to the wrong person and if given to others it is just a slap on the wrist. Crimes should be taken seriously and the same goes for punishments. People should go to prison or do community service based on what they did, they shouldn't be let off so easily. The justice system seems to think that by using public shaming a criminal will not commit the crime again. In some cases this may work, but in other cases the criminal will continue to commit crimes. Public shaming will not solve any of the societal problems that create crime, nor will it decrease crime rates. Criminals will not stop committing crimes because they are shamed in the eyes of the public. In fact, criminals who are shamed in public will likely commit more crimes now that they are labeled as criminals. Today society works like this, people are labeled for what they have done. No matter how much one tries to become a better person or what one does to redeem oneself, one will still remain what society labels him or her. So, if a person were to be labeled as a criminal, they would only commit more crimes because that is what society expects from this… middle of paper… service related to the crime committed. He gives examples like that of a drunk driver convicted of helping in car accidents to show them what really happens that they are unaware of. This is a much bigger and more reasonable punishment because people will actually learn from their mistakes. Volunteering can help improve the person and put them on the right path. Public shaming is more than just punishment for people, they either learn nothing from it or they hate themselves for doing it. It should not be considered appropriate under any circumstances. A crime is a crime, no matter how big or small, people should serve time for what they did. They should not be put out in public and made fun of. They should be placed in a place where they can learn from their mistakes and get the help they need to improve themselves as human beings.
