Since Poseidon, god of earthquakes, is still furious at Odysseus for stabbing Polyphemus in the eye, the Phaeacian xenia went awry. They hosted their guest adequately, but they went against the will of the gods and in a sense showed no respect to the gods, especially Poseidon. After Poseidon learned that Odysseus had returned to Ithaca, he said, "Now I will lose all my honor among the immortals, now there are mortal men who show me no respect, even the Phaeacians."
