The problem with the ideal self is that the individual is the only one who can change their creative perspective. Karen Horney (1950) explains further with this statement. The energies that push towards self-realization are shifted to the purpose of actualizing the idealized self. (p.24) Therefore the person leaves reality to go into the world of fantasy. Karen Horney's theory on neurotic statements in chapter 2 was the only chapter I couldn't get into. I understand that in the neurotic statements that I individual create a fantasy world in which everything is not the same, but at a certain point the fantasy must stop and reality must take over.
