Critical Problem Along with the development of the modern economy, social stratification has become a critical problem as citizens are divided into strata that receive unequal access to social opportunities and rewards. Therefore, many dystopian literatures have been published that are used to criticize current social and political systems. While the upper class enjoys power and prosperity, other members of society, such as the people from District Twelve in the novel The Hunger Gamers, must go hungry and endure the pressure of survival. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins criticizes class stratification in contemporary society by depicting an absurd inequality between the Capitol and the twelve boroughs in order to bring this serious social issue to the forefront. The representation of the inhabitants of District Twelve in The Hunger Games serves as an exaggerated commentary and reflection on the class division of current society. In the country of Panem there is a huge disparity between rich and poor, which is revealed in many ways throughout the novel. In District Twelve, where Katniss lives, starvation is common. The author describes District Twelve as a state of poverty where residents lack the basic needs to live. This extreme inequality is shown in the comparison between the lavish lifestyle presented in the Capitol and the struggling culture of the poor. The living conditions of the poor are extremely difficult, but they cannot do anything due to the restricted system set up by the government. The author shows the class division between rich and poor mainly through the quality of food that is provided to people. The most basic food means luxury to the people of District Twelve. To sur...... middle of paper ......aration of Independence “All men are created equal”, but the goal is difficult to achieve. The dystopian novel The Hunger Games served to warn readers of a bleak future if people continue to live in ignorance and social stratification. Many scenes in the story relate to the real world, such as the suffering that needy people have to endure while other wealthy people live comfortable lives with a sense of animosity towards the poor. The author purposely creates an extremely absurd class difference in the novel, making readers think about whether they want America to fall into a depressing society like Panem. This dystopian story offers a warning to people to recognize the gravity and danger of social division; ultimately encourages them to criticize this problem occurring in contemporary society and prevent things from getting worse in the future.
