The Big Apple has the largest subway system in the world, with hundreds of stations spread across the five boroughs. The subway is one of the cheapest forms of transportation and allows passengers to pay a price and get off whenever they want. The buses in the city also work the same way as the subway. In addition to plenty of public transportation, many choose to explore the city on foot. “New York is the most walkable large city in the United States with 8,175,133 residents” (New York Neighborhoods on Walk Score). New York City's grid streets make getting around the city very easy. Being able to walk to one's destination instead of taking public transportation saves an individual a great deal of money over time. For example, if someone took a taxi from Madison Square Garden to Times Square, they would end up paying about $10.55 to travel 0.9 miles. Taxis charge $2.50 for the initial fare, $0.50 for every four blocks driven, $0.50 for every minute of idle time, surcharges and then an additional tip. Even though taxis may be considered expensive, people can avoid it completely by walking, making New York very affordable and accessible
