During the colonial period in America, the practice of slavery was harsh and terrifying. The treatment of slaves was terrible, especially for women. Historically, women were treated as inferior beings to men, especially if they were black slaves. The book “Chica Da Silva: An Eighteenth Century Brazilian Slave” written by JF Furtado challenges the above-mentioned views. In Furtado's book we meet the character of Chica da Silva, a woman born into slavery, who against all odds of the times became one of the most influential people in society. “Chica Da Silva lived out her days, first as a slave, then as a free mulatto and companion of the most important man in the region – the diamond entrepreneur – and finally as a matriarch of many descendants whom she sought to protect and give standing positive in local society. ”Chica da Silva was born between 1731 and 1735.
