In the reading passage, Walker states, "Maggie will be nervous until her sister is gone: she will stand helplessly in the corners, insignificant and ashamed... looking at her sister with envy and awe” (336). Maggie is not seen as a person with a strong personality and is a static character. Instead, Jing mei was able to look inside and saw a “girl staring at me she was angry, powerful. This girl and I were the same” (Tan 384). Jing mei reaches an epiphany that causes the protagonist to become a dynamic character with a strong personality and helps him resolve an internal conflict strong heritage theme in both plots. “Two Kinds” Amy Tan says that when Jing mei tried to defy expectations, the protagonist's mother said: “Only two kinds of daughters, she shouted in Chinese obedient and those who follow their own mind! Only one kind of daughter can live in this house. Obedient daughter!”
