The emergence of modern cognition was instrumental in separating early humans from our primate predecessors, but archeology and anthropology have provided different arguments at precisely when this occurred . There have been several claims that the modern mind may have arisen when early humans created the first stone tools, the first personal ornaments, or the first works of art. Upon further analysis it becomes clear that the first complex thought did not arise from any of these individual events but rather from a combination of the first two scenarios mentioned since the third scenario supports the statement. The human spark cannot be identified by the development of technology alone but rather by the gradual change that occurs between the innovations of stone tools and personal ornaments known as the Lower and Middle Paleolithic period. There is solid evidence provided in the conservative and traditional belief that complex cognition began as a result of the ability to transform stone into tools. The field of psychology has shown that fine motor skills are required to fit stones into flints and sharp stones associated with Oldowan and Acheulean traditions during a pilot positron emission tomography (PET) study. (Wynn 2002, Pg. 391) This was due to the application of bilateral, three-dimensional, rotational, and broken symmetry, all of which required advance planning and a solid understanding of the natural world and its minerals. (Wynn 2002, Pg. 395) collaboration with anthropological approaches reveals that these abilities could be replicated in bonobos only after receiving direct stimuli, restrictions on other production methods, and the absence of intended symmetry. (Wynn 392) The tools are fundamental to present to society...... in the center of the card ......elements such as totemism and anthropomorphism. (Mithen 164) My definition of modern cognition is the ability to apply physical motor skills to create products that contain significant value not in terms of material labor but of alternative purposes since it was these skills that allowed early humans to communicate effectively ideas and innovate beyond the natural capabilities of animals and this is well represented by the hybrid form of development undertaken by early humans during the Lower and Middle Paleolithic through the physical form of stone tools and then socially through personal ornamentation which presented the ability to create complex meanings of representation in the physical world. This fusion between these two fields thrived in an explosion of innovation demonstrated in art and later in a renaissance called the Neolithic Period..
