Hispanic diversity shares the same language but has many differences. In this research paper the four groups I will talk about will include: Mexican Americans, Puerto Rican Americans, Venezuelan Americans, and finally Colombian Americans. Areas that will be discussed will include: linguistic, political, social, economic, religion and family conventions and/or family status. Puerto Rican Americans When you walk out of the entrance of any train station in Brooklyn N.Y, you could immediately hear salsa music blaring from different auto shops, home and corners. The aroma of all types of Mexican food fills the air. Looking around the neighborhood, the community is full of Puerto Rican Americans who are proud of their homeland with flags waving in the cool breeze. Like any other culture, the language spoken is the identity of Puerto Rican Americans. Spanish linguistics is very important in the community. As in many Puerto Rican families, many U.S.-born children whose heritage is questioned daily due to physical traits have traced their Puerto Rican heritage back to being born in the U.S. and raised only to speak proper English. This is proof that many Puerto Ricans value their language and use it as part of their identity. (Green, 2000). Politically for Puerto Rican American Jose Cabrenas was the first Puerto Rican to be appointed to a federal court. He paved the way for many others to be able to speak openly and this is where bilingualism helps in selecting a candidate to be nominated in the political system and achieved a successful election. (Garcia & Neives-Ferreri 2006). As for the social side, Puerto Rican Americans are the most ethnically and diverse population, even though their skin colors are different, they are a very warm and friendly group of people who like to be sociable and friendly with other people. The economic status of many Puerto Ricans is what leads them to emigrate to the United States. Many Puerto Rican American men and women work as barbers, construction workers, and contract workers. As mainstream American culture began to function, many of these Puerto Rican Americans moved to other cities taking high-paying jobs and white-collar professional jobs. Religion is very important to Puerto Rican Americans and their families.
