The idea of parental responsibility is explored in Dickens Hard Times. This concept is seen in the relationships between Gradgrind and his children, Louisa and Tom and indirectly through Mr Jupe's abandonment of Sissy. While the idea of parental responsibility covers a broad aspect, Dickens explores the parental responsibility of developing morality in children and the parental responsibility of realizing one's shortcomings as a parent. A key character who displays the theme of parental responsibility is Thomas Gradgrind. Gradgrind is a middle-class businessman who prides himself on believing that only facts, mathematics, and measurable things are considered important. It is based on this belief that shapes the way she raises her children, Louisa and Tom. Gradgrind's parental responsibility, or lack thereof, can be clearly seen through Louisa. Because Louisa grew up under Gradgrind's harsh rules, she developed a lack of morality and a hatred for her father. This can be seen when Louisa confronts Gradgrind one night confessing her quasi-affair with Harthouse. This confession comes after Harthouse reveals his feelings for Louisa and asks her to run away. When Louisa confesses to Gradgrind, she realizes that through her form of teaching and by not allowing her children to explore anything other than the idea of facts, she has messed up their sense of morality. This realization highlights Gradgrind's lack of parental responsibility regarding Louisa's morality, but also shows his responsibility in accepting that he has influenced these choices made by Louisa. Gradgrind's lack of parental responsibility is similarly seen through his son Tom. Like Louisa, Tom grew up based on Gradgrind's theory of actually believing only...half of paper...questioned. Sissy is taken in by Gradgrind who gives her a job as a maid. Although his teachings do not affect her in the same way as Louisa and Tom, the act of abandoning Sissy highlights Mr. Jupe's lack of parental responsibility. By letting Sissy take care of someone else, he neglected his responsibility to help her develop morality and emotional maturity. It can be seen in Dickens Hard Times which explores the ways in which the idea of parental responsibility can shape and shape Sissy's life. choices of individuals. The notion of how circumstances and education can influence and change a person's morality and emotional maturity. These ideas are explored both indirectly and directly through Gradgrind and his children, Louisa and Tom, and through Sissy. Dickens also highlights how individuals can also notice the lack of parental responsibility and change.
