One of the most important themes in William Shakespeare's play Macbeth comes from one of the last lines of Act 1, Scene 1 of the play. The three witches utter this phrase "Beautiful is ugly, and ugly is beautiful" (1:1:12), shortly before dispersing and becoming a prophecy and a secret warning for the rest of the work. This line becomes more and more important as the play unfolds, even starting with Macbeth's opinions at the beginning of the story and continuing throughout the play with the constant themes of deception and doing evil in the name of good . We see that right from the start the unfolding events and themes can all be predicted through these first lines of Act 1 Scene 1, events and themes surrounding Macbeth's final death. This line “Fair is foul, and foul is fair” is important to the play Macbeth. When the witches said that phrase for the first time it seemed that they were speaking clearly, that the phrase meant what is right or good, for witches is disgusting or evil like death or betrayal and what is evil and disgusting for witches is right and good like happiness and the butterfly. However, when comparing the quote with the rest of the themes of the work, we interpret a deeper meaning in the phrase. We know that the quote is an important theme that tells the plot of the work in a few simple words. We see that a similar phrase at the beginning also refers to the victory of the war achieved by Macbeth, highlighted in the phrase: "Such a bad and fair day have I never seen." We interpret this as a good day for victory but a bad day for lives lost and as the horrible weather the army experiences afterwards. “Beautiful is ugly and ugly is beautiful,” also shows up in… middle of the card… after killing King Duncan. It is strange or “disgusting” that he should think about religion after committing such an ungodly act. Macbeth becomes very paranoid after this crime and his paranoia grows as he progresses into his disgusting ways. The witches influence Macbeth's life by meeting him for the first time and telling him his future. They turn his life upside down. Macbeth is not the person he seems. He is introduced as a warrior hero, whose fame on the battlefield earns him honor from King Duncan, but in the end that same warrior hero killed the king and died the worst of deaths. The meaning of "Good is bad and bad is right" to me in a simple version is that things that seem good might be bad, and that things that seem bad and bad might actually turn out to be good. Macbeth seemed like a noble warrior but in reality he was a cold-blooded murderer and a power-hungry person.
