Mary Shelley's life is full of ups and downs. At that time Shelley wrote the novel Frankenstein. Although Frankenstein is a fictional novel, it is similar to Mary Shelley's real life story. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was born to the parents of Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin on August 30, 1797 in London, England. After Mary's birth, her mother died ten days later (“Mary” 2). Four years later William Godwin remarried. Mary Shelley was not formally educated but was surrounded by the intellectual atmosphere of her father and his friends. He read a wide variety of books, most of which were from his mother's collection (“Mary” 2). Mary's favorite refuge was her mother's grave. He went there to read and write ("Mary" 2). Mary met Percy Shelley at the age of fourteen. Two years later they met again and realized their attraction (“Maria” 2). At the time Percy was married with two children. Like Mary's parents, they believed in love rather than legal marriage (“Mary” 2). July 1814, Mary and Percy eloped before her seventeenth birthday. The next few years Mary and Percy spent traveling in Switzerland, Germany, and Italy (“Mary” 2). After Percy left his family, Percy's father cut off his allowance. Mary and Percy's life was thus filled with financial hardship and personal tragedy (“Mary” 2). As recorded by Eleanor, the couple had children: their first son William died as an infant, as did the other Clara and Everina. After William's death, Mary had a dream. March 19, 1815; Mary's dream was recorded in her diary "Dream that my little baby would come back to life, that it was just cold and that we would rub it in front of the fire and it would live" [SIC]. The anxieties linked to motherhood and the inability to give life led her to write...... in the middle of the paper...... dates and names. The novel Frankenstein was born from a double fear(np). Fear that women cannot have healthy, normal children and fear that an author cannot write. Margaret Walton Saville from the novel has the same initials as Mary Shelley (np). The day Walton sees the creature, July 31, 1797, was the year Mary was born. Frankenstein ends on September 12, 1797, which is two days after the death of Mary's mother (np).
