To determine the degree to which the city of Los Angeles can be considered sustainable, I selected the Egan Wheel, shown below, as the basis for the analysis. Sustainability is defined as “the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (United Nations). In contrast to purely environmental sustainability, I have chosen to focus on a more comprehensive sustainability that includes all aspects of society. To be truly sustainable, a community must “efficiently use natural resources, improve the environment, strengthen economic prosperity and promote social cohesion” (United Nations). Therefore, the Egan Wheel, shown below, serves as a blueprint for my research. sustainable (Sellick). At the time, the British government was trying to improve the quality of life. As a result, Egan created the Egan Wheel as a tool for judging sustainable communities. The wheel is made up of eight subsections: governance, transport, services, environment, equity, economy, construction and built environment, social and cultural; each section describes the ideal sustainable approach to its aspects. In order to quantitatively examine each industry based on a qualitative description, I used factual data and an opinion survey I conducted in Los Angeles. To get adequate results for my survey, I recruited four classmates and divided the 18 survey questions into three smaller surveys. We conducted a survey at The Grove and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles, randomly selecting participants to answer six questions each. These surveys provide a supplement to the factual research in my review... half of the document... CBS Los Angeles. CBS Los Angeles, August 6, 2013. Web. February 23, 2014.25.
