This year, applications to enroll in medical schools increased by 6.1% to over 48,000, beating the record set in 1996 (Lopatto). Job opportunities for doctors and nurses have piqued the interest of younger generations and this, I believe, is due to the compelling and captivating experiences that come from these fields. The article “The Central Line” by Atul Gawande covers an example of what these future surgeons and doctors learn while in the field. However, the student will not perform perfectly the first time. Of course, the techniques of using tools and how to perform procedures take practice and time to perfect, as demonstrated through Gawande's writings. Repetition and training are necessary to excel at any skill or act. In his article, Gawnde motivates his readers through the use of his credibility and emotional appeals to the brakes on learning. In the article, Gawande shares a story from when he worked in a hospital as a resident. His very first procedure, inserting a central line into the heart of a robust man to receive nourishment, would pose few problems if it were performed by expert hands. However, knowing that this is his first operation to perform alone, Gawande's nervousness grows at the thought of what could go dramatically wrong. Before starting, the author recalls having studied in advance all the movements and precise cuts performed by his superior named S. on a person with the same type of procedure. After feeling informed and confident, Gawande begins by gathering all the tools needed for the job. But when he thought he was finished, S. intervenes, reminding him of the many things he didn't remember to take or put away. He uncomfortably shrugged off the errors and began by locating the point about the man... in the center of the paper... he had a real sense that even the best things take patience and work, and readers take this advice to apply to their own lives . While it can be difficult to search deep within yourself for the strength to overcome difficulties, Gawnade proves himself worthy with his language of giving someone a boost in confidence. Over the years, he has built his resume and exceeded expectations by making a career in the medical field, bringing great value to his knowledge and background information. To his intelligence he adds emotions to win over his audience and hope for the best in his efforts, giving advice on how to practice to perfect himself. Showcasing multiple forms of writing, Gawande motivates people to fight for their dreams. Works Cited Lopatto, Elizabeth. “Medical School Applications, Enrollment Rising.” Bloomberg.com.
