Topic > Jonathan Barnbrook Biography - 1269

British-born Jonathan Barnbrook grew up in Lupton just outside London, studied graphic design at Central St. Martins in London and graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1990. Barnbrook was a graphic designer, director and printer; although over the course of his career as a postmodernist designer he had become widely known for his typography, and his graphic design was heavily influenced by politics and reading. Barnbrook had produced work for commercial clients and personal work with the firm belief that design could be used as a weapon to force cultural and social change. Being a proponent of anti-capitalist ideology on political events, Barnbrook is often seen incorporating these strong messages and viewpoints into his personal work. Additionally in this essay we will explore some of Barnbrook's works such as the influences and significance of the Exocet typeface; Tibor Kalman inspired a billboard that makes a statement about anti-capitalism and his project Tomorrow's Truth: Consumerism is America's war fuel and why it opposes consumerism. These works created by Barnbrook will highlight how he has incorporated hidden connotations into his work to spark engagement with viewers and his work. Jonathan Barnbrook firmly believed that typography conveyed meaning, often creating a connection between the past, through his Exocet typeface Barnbrook was able to express his strong opinion on the Gulf War and the French government. The Exocet typeface was Barnbrook's first typeface to be released commercially, inspired by early Greek and Roman stone carvings. Barnbrook strangely thought that these carvings looked “very modern” (Heller and Pettit 1998, p. 22). and consequently I wanted to express this to people.
