Approaches that could be used to make a decision The decision making strategy that would be most effective with the problem and decision that Mr. Miller will need to make would be best made in a group decision making process. This allows Mr. Miller to share the problem with his staff and listen to the staff's insights and ideas (Green 2013). There is no way Mr. Miller will make the decision alone about how to implement instructional changes so that gifted students receive more rigor and challenging instruction, while also meeting the needs of students who require a significant amount of instruction to succeed. This is a decision that will require a team approach. Mr. Miller should also encourage parents to attend these meetings. Research shows that when parents attend school meetings and share their input and ideas, it promotes participation and a sense of collaboration between schools and parents (Epstein, n.d.)Mr. Miller has two sets of parents who demand different things, but support Mr. Miller. One group of parents believes that gifted students are not being challenged enough, while the other group of parents is satisfied with the education of all students and would like Mr. Miller to make no changes. Mr. Miller is very fortunate in the sense that he has the support of both sets of parents. He established a relationship with both sets of parents. Since Mr. Miller is new to the school, he will need to demonstrate proficiency in Standard 5 of the ISLLC Standards to the community and parents, in his ability to act with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner, for his students to be successful (Green, 2013). As a leader, Mr. Miller will be expected to demonstrate Standard 5 of...... middle of document ......ez, Edwards, 2008). From my point of view, the section does not promote a partnership between parents and school. Promotes keeping parents informed about any issues that may arise with their student, progress, and any academic concerns. The section seems like a one-sided communication and sends the message: teachers, only talk to parents when there is something to report about their students. However, within the section it also states that teachers and counselors should contact parents to strategize about academic approval plans. Along with the message my school is sending, I would like to add the message: All parents are encouraged by the school district to be actively involved in decision making at their student's school by attending board meetings, school improvement meetings, and any other meeting that you as a parent deem appropriate to attend.
