Topic > The Death of the Future Like Ours - Abortion - 939

With the increasing number of teenage pregnancies nowadays, there is no doubt that abortion is one of the most controversial issues since the 16th century. Abortion is documented as early as the 11th century, but became known to the public in the late 1800s. In Canada, there are currently no legal restrictions related to abortion as it was decriminalized on January 28, 1988. However, in several areas of the country There are still ongoing debates about whether abortion is morally acceptable or not. Pro-choice (pro-abortion) insists that fetuses are not included in the principle of “right to life” therefore abortion is permitted. They base their argument on the personality principle where they define a “person” as someone who is rational, autonomous, has self-awareness, etc. On the other hand, pro-life (anti-abortion) advocates the opposite and push the principle that fetuses are “biologically human,” therefore they deserve to have the right to live. Different angles of argument have been considered, but they all end in stalemate. Marquis, for example, offers a solution that could solve the problem once and for all. According to Don Marquis, “Abortion is presumably very seriously wrong, where the presumption is very strong – as strong as the presumption that killing another adult human being is wrong” (Marquis, p. 371). In his work Why is abortion immoral? , he argues that the main reason why it is morally impermissible to kill an adult human being is neither the effect on the killer nor on the people left behind by the victim, but because killing him deprives him of the value of his future. All the activities, projects, experiences and enjoyments that he will be able to have in the future are taken away from him (Marchese, p. 367). Therefore, kill anyone who has a "future... middle of paper... anything he wants to do with his body. All people experience different kinds of misfortunes throughout their lives. However, one can lose something special for himself, but he can still function as a human being without it. Losing someone very close to him, he can still go on and be successful in life the greatest misfortune that can happen to someone (Marchese, p. 370). Abortion is not only killing one's life, but also killing one's future and the potential value of what one can do , except in rare cases, morally wrong.
