Families of police officers often don't know what to expect once their loved ones join the police force. I Love a Cop is a good guide to help family members understand what their officer might face and how to deal with certain situations that might arise. Kirschman accompanies you throughout your service period, from your rookie year to retirement. Since the book is primarily about a highly stressful job, the book can also be applied to other stressful and demanding careers. I also found some helpful tips that could be applied to my life. Kirschman is a clinical psychologist and counselor who works with peace officers and their families. He is a member of the Psychological Services Subsection of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. In 2000, she was named Woman of Distinction by Police Spouses Around the World. As part of his job he participates in family sessions for the families of new officers and dispatchers. Tell them about the myths and realities of police work and the emotional risks associated with the job (Kirschman, 2007. p. 1-2). She believes that presenting a realistic vision of the future is one of the best antidotes to burnout and disappointment. The main purpose of the guidance talks and his book is to encourage families to act as a team and energetically manage the; spillover between work and home (Kirschman, 2007. Pg3). According to the website Goodreads, she has worked as a police and public safety psychologist for over thirty years. He spends his time writing, teaching, and volunteering as a clinician at the West Coast Post Trauma Retreat for First Responders.
