In the novel Native Son there are many impulsive decisions made by the main character Bigger, and I would like to delve deeper into his behavior throughout the story. Racism is known to have a negative effect on people of color in the United States, and numerous research has concluded that racism continues to cause negative social, physical, economic, and psychological effects that in some cases carry over from generation to generation. . Racism continues to have an underlying negative effect on job hiring practices, home mortgages, education, and quality healthcare for people of color. This article will focus on the character Bigger, analyze the negative effects of racism and its contribution to Bigger's thoughts, attitude, opinions, behavior and social interactions. Being an African American, Bigger has always lived his life according to the do's and don'ts of white people and for this reason he has developed a hatred towards them. Bigger and his family live in low-income housing in Chicago, a run-down apartment to be honest, and as this is a fact, Bigger feels powerless to change his family's living situation and this makes him angry. He and his mother, both unemployed adults in the family, need to provide some kind of income, so Bigger's mother urges him to accept the position offered to him by Mr. Dalton. His mother often nags him and is not the most encouraging parent. Bigger makes it a hobby to go out and commit petty crimes with these friends only against other blacks because of the fear he has of whites. Gus, one of Bigger's friends, soon becomes one of his victims of inner anger used to hide his true fear, when he convinces his friends to finally set out to rob Mr. Blum, a w... middle of paper. ......literally walks out of the room. Now Bigger is starting to get scared. The same fear he'd felt when it came time to rob Blums. Being a black man in a situation like this is bound to make his life go away quickly. Bigger now thinks like a murderer, even though it wasn't his intention to kill Mary, he feels he has no other options. He uses a trunk to put Mary's body inside and heads to the basement. Taking a look at the furnace changed his initial plan. He decided to put Mary's body in the furnace and burn it. The body didn't fit right, so he had to cut off her head and burn that too. After finishing with her, he left for home. In the morning Bigger returned to the Dalton house and everyone was still asleep. He checked the furnace to see his cruel work. Peggy begins to worry about where Mary is as the time approaches when Mary is supposed to leave for the station.
