Textbooks today should contain more than what was in the texts of centuries ago. I believe Fitzgerald's analysis of American history is correct; they no longer have as much useful information as they used to. Children should learn about the importance of World War II, the Revolutionary War and why the Berlin Wall fell. Children should learn about current events about what is happening in America today, learn about the importance, and discuss the meaning of each. There are so many acts of sacrifice, heroism, compassion and courage, unity and fierce determination. These examples are especially important for our children. I have the feeling that children reflect the values they see in their parents and their heroes. In recent years our children have witnessed all of America's great figures, such as Christopher Columbus, Daniel Boone and Captain John Smith. They saw Americans fighting for their country; and they must know why their country is worth fighting for. If children are told the true story of America, they will also learn to love America.
