Rene and the pin up girl show a common Western theme regarding Western male and female fantasies. Rene fantasizes about his perfect girlfriend who has the stereotypical characteristics of a Western woman, but throughout the play he has been pursuing an Asian woman. Rene also argues with his conscience named Marc who tries to boost Rene's confidence. Rene aspires to be just like Marc, who is a typical Western womanizer and speaks with confidence. Rene showed signs with his power play on Song but ends up not living up to Marc's expectations. Marc leaves René to his terrible fate and doesn't seem to care about giving René another chance. Hwang shows the disconnect between fantasy and reality with these characters. In reality a person is limited, whereas in a fantasy setting the possibilities are limited
