Topic > Nick's Judgment - 889

Nick is “inclined to reserve all judgment” for the reason that “he is one of the few honest people I have ever met” as he himself says. He only prevents his judgments from being manifested to the people for whom he makes them. It is until the end of the story that he refrains from showing his feelings towards the other characters on his face. In the course of the business plot we read about, Nick became involved with the two greatest powers in the world. New York at the time. East Egg and West Egg, new money and old money drag our main character through a sad course of events that leads to heartbreak for everyone involved. Until the last part of his story his thoughts about the others involved are silent to their ears as he is almost wary of speaking badly or unkindly about others to their faces. When things start to go bad we see Nick show resentment towards rich old men. He got to the point where he didn't want anything to do with Jordan for a while. Tom is the biggest change in the end. Nick respects Tom's face until after the funeral. He had had some reasonably bad thoughts about Tom's person but, after what he was sure Tom was doing regarding Gatsby's murder, he began to feel less accepted in his position of having to show him respect. Tom had pushed a man to kill Gatsby and Nick knew it. So in the end, when Tom goes to shake his hand, Nick rejects the gesture and leaves him with no respect or courtesy in his actions. He didn't seem interested in trying to show his true feelings to any of them. They were above him in the social structure of the society. He was thrown around at the whim of the people who had made his acquaintance. His cousin Daisy... in the center of the paper... and there was her involvement in the murder of his friend. From his one meeting with Tom Buchanan we can see how their meeting is different than before. Nick finally had the motivation to treat Old Money the way he deserved to be treated. Everyone who had been in this story had made judgments about another. Nick was different. He was different in that he had not openly shown his feelings towards almost anyone, especially when his feelings towards another person were bad. Eventually things had changed. Nick would feel less important than the other characters due to his lack of money compared to all of them. After their cruel treatment of Gatsby after his death, Nick saw them for what they are. Old Money, New Money, East Egg or West Egg weren't all better than him and it took a tragedy for Nick to gain this "old sport" knowledge"”.
