Another method of dehumanizing the Jews was to ensure that they turned against each other. Once the Jews began to turn against each other, it kept them in their place and allowed them to distrust each other even though the real culprits were the Germans. As goods were in short supply, it didn't take long for the ghettos to descend into chaos. Stealing became a common practice among those who could not afford to buy illegally on the black market. Another way to ensure that Jews constantly distrusted each other was to ensure that Jews were the ones running the ghettos. Within the ghettos, a Jewish police force called the Jüdischer Ordnungsdienst was created to prevent Jews from fleeing the ghettos. They wore armbands with an identifying mark and a badge. They could not use firearms but could carry truncheons. The Jewish police reported every incident to the German police responsible for monitoring the perimeters outside the ghettos. They were recruited by two groups: lawyers and criminals. The criminal group was larger and soon became the dominant force behind policing and life within the ghettos. A special group called Group 13 was created in the Warsaw Ghetto with the aim of fighting the black market that was thriving at that time.
