Utilitarianism is an ethical theory proposed by Jeremy Bentham and defended by James Mill. The theory says that all activities should be directed towards achieving the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. Utilitarianism is impractical and very unrealistic because it refuses to focus on the values, morals and happiness of the individual. Utilitarianism does not advocate risking one's life for the sake of others and in fact rewards such behavior. Utilitarianism states that if the outcome of a person's death saves many lives, then it is obligated to do so. Utilitarianism states that no friendship is more important than any other friendship. This is a concern because it is unrealistic in the sense that it devalues relationships. Utilitarianism sees friendship and love as an instrumental value, it sees friendship as a material one. This theory makes many incorrect assumptions about how to view relationships. Our personal bond with our friends prevents us from achieving what is best for the common good because our attachment to friends is greater than we might have for someone we don't know. This is problematic because relationships are much more complicated than utilitarianism claims. It's difficult for people to emphasize their own needs and the needs of those they love for the greater good.
