The setting of a story allows you to create a clearer image in the reader's mind and easily relate to what the characters are feeling. Jackson uses normal descriptions deceiving the reader into a false commonality. The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny with the fresh warmth of an entire summer day; the flowers bloomed profusely (Jackson 134). Jackson uses a beautiful summer day to make the reader think good thoughts about what happens on a summer day. This description of the setting occurs early in the story, so right away Jackson is trying to trick the reader into thinking that June 27th is a perfect day. The reader's mindset is not thinking about how someone should get high on a cool summer day. Soon the men began to gather, watching their children, talking about plantations, rain, tractors and taxes. Women wearing faded house dresses and sweaters arrived shortly after their men. They greeted each other and exchanged gossip as they went to join their husbands (Jackson 135). The men and women wait for the lottery to start and spend the time socializing with each other. A summer day when women wear loungewear seems like a wonderful time for anyone. The women talk about the latest gossip and the men talk about tractors and taxes.
