The debate between nature and nurture has been ongoing since the beginning of psychology. Some psychologists support the natural perspective position. They argue that people are born with predispositions toward certain personalities, traits, and other characteristics that help shape them into the people they become later in life. Meanwhile, many other psychologists support the education perspective. They believe that people are born as blank slates and that their experiences throughout life help shape their personality, traits, and other characteristics. One topic that can be discussed from both perspectives is obsessive-compulsive disorder. People who develop obsessive-compulsive disorder are influenced by their hereditary predispositions and events that occur in their environment. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disorder that causes people to develop anxiety when certain obsessions or compulsions are not satisfied. OCD can affect both children and adults, and more than half of all adults with OCD say they experienced symptoms as children. People living with OCD show many obvious signs such as opening and closing a door fifty times because they have to do it “right”. Others show extreme cleanliness and wash their hands or shower as often as possible because they constantly feel dirty. OCD wreaks havoc on people's social lives as they are fixated and obsessed with perfection that can take forever to achieve. However, people living with OCD often have above-average intelligence and typically excel in school due to their detail-oriented mindset, cautious planning, and patience. OCD can be caused by many different factors, such as genetics or the ever-changing world a...... middle of paper ......c but it would take a considerable amount of evidence for my point your view changes completely. Hereditary dispositions and a busy, ever-changing life can influence the development of obsessive-compulsive disorder. The debate between nature and culture fascinates countless people who take a stand and hold firm to their opinion. No agreement will ever be reached until one party can conclusively prove the other is wrong beyond a reasonable doubt.
