Bilbo Baggins lives a peaceful life in his hobbit lair. He lives in Baggins House, near the city of Hobbiton, but one day this tranquility is shattered by the arrival of the wizard Gandalf. Gandalf convinces Bilbo to join him on a journey with a group of thirteen mildly aggressive dwarves. They are about to embark on a quest to reclaim their treasure from the dragon Smaug, and Bilbo is expected to act as the thief in the plan. Bilbo isn't sure he wants to leave the comfort of his hobbit hole, but Gandalf manages to convince him to come. Soon after they leave, three trolls capture all of them except Gandalf, who manages to convince the trolls to stay outside after dawn and the sun turns them to stone. The group then finds a stash of troll weapons. Gandalf and the dwarf lord Thorin take magical swords, while Bilbo takes a small sword of his own. The party stops at the elven fortress of Rivendell where they receive advice from the elf Lord Elrond, then set out to cross the Misty Mountains.
