“Courage is when you know you've been defeated before you start, but you start anyway and make it no matter what” this is what Atticus Finch thinks let it be courage. Courage is one of the main themes in Harper Lee's book titled To Kill a Mockingbird and how it is shown in the characters in this novel. Courage is shown in Jem, Scout, Mrs. Dubose and the main character who showed a lot of courage was Atticus. Courage is shown in Jem and Scout many times throughout the novel and here are some of them. At the beginning of the novel, Scout shows the courage she had on the first day of school. She becomes courageous in telling Miss Caroline about Walter Cunningham's problem and her situation. Miss Caroline scolds Scout for knowing how to read. Scout thinks the class needs leadership because most kids his age are afraid to talk to their teacher like this. She was courageous in speaking out about Walter's situation. Jem faced a brave situation when he left his pants at the Radley house. It was braver to go and get them than to worry about Atticus whipping him. Jem risked his life by making Atticus angry, he could have shot him but he still went for his pants. The courage he had that saves him from a wrong decision. Courage was shown again when Jem, Scout, and Dill were playing and Dill dared Jem to go and touch the Radley house. Then Jem runs very fast and touches the side of Radley's seat. Even though Jem knew he would get in trouble or that something would happen, he was still brave to go to the Radley house, which no one was brave enough to do. Jem and Scout have shown courage many other times. “Your father is no better than the niggers and trash he works for!” said Mrs. Dubose. When he told Atticus that way, Jem became angry and decided that... middle of paper... the people of Maycomb needed to know the truth about Tom. “That boy might go to the chair, but he won't go until the truth is told.” Atticus later showed courage when he went to prison to protect Tom from a mob. Without thinking twice he rushed towards Tom. He knew that the crowd would be bigger than him and that he would be easily defeated. However, he prioritized Tom's well-being. Among all the examples of courage there is not a situation in which the character was not courageous during that period. Jem, Scout, Mrs. Dubose, and Atticus understood the risks they were taking but continued with their actions. Scout still had to deal with Mrs. Caroline's scolding. Jem finally told his father what he had done to the Radleys. Mrs. Dubose died because she was morphine free. Atticus finally wins in his mind. They might lose or win, but they don't regret the courage they showed, so something good could happen.
