THE POLITICAL BENEFITS OF IMMIGRATION POLICY REFORMS IN THE UNITED STATES IntroductionRecent reforms proposed by the United States government have attracted debate in several quarters. To a large extent, they were seen as the urgency on the part of the government to ensure the rationalization of the country's population by adopting reforms. The issue has gained great importance in the recent past due to the growing number of immigrants in the country. As the years pass, the number of immigrants to the United States continues to increase. This was fueled by the need of these people to seek new opportunities and a better life in the country. This is what is commonly called the “American Dream”. The main concern identified as part of solving the problem is the evaluation of the immigrant population, especially those who do not have the required documents. Critics of immigration argue that it is these immigrants who pose a threat to the country's security. Therefore, this is the main aspect that has raised the need for reform in immigration policy. Currently, there is no comprehensive framework that provides guidelines for how such immigrants should be incorporated into the country's demographic framework. According to statistics published in 2011, the number of immigrants to the United States who did not have the required documentation was 11.5 million (Roberts par. 4). To some extent, several authors have argued that the strategies adopted by the US government are political. This is based on the overwhelming support that immigration policy reform has received from the US government, even more so from Democrats. Joan Robinson:2This report evaluates the political benefits of immigration policy... middle of paper... ...will likely have a positive impact on Democrats' political development now and in future years.Part of keeping the promiseTo some extent, the immigration policy reform proposed by the United States government could be seen as a strategy to keep the promise made during the election campaigns. Before the 2008 election, the Obama administration promised the country would make immigration policy a key priority during its term. However, this did not materialize. The plight of immigrants remained unresolved during the four years of his administration. This caused discomfort among immigrants as they felt disadvantaged. This has led to nationwide protest by the immigrant population advocating for reform of the country's immigration policy (See photos 1 and 2). This put the Obama administration in a negative light.
