StonehengeStonehenge, one of England's most baffling structures, has historians, researchers and archaeologists very uncertain about its true purpose. Whatever Stonehenge is, it is an amazing structure full of mystery and magic. Between 1919 and 1950 there was a major breakthrough when archaeologists began to find the remains of Stonehenge. Today the remains of Stonehenge can be visited in the fields of Wittshire, England, where they have remained for almost 5,000 years. Stonehenge has three main areas starting with the inner circle, a smaller semi-circle of stone, and a larger, more defined horseshoe surrounding the two smaller areas. The inner part of Stonehenge dates back more than 5000 years. The radius of the inner circle extends 320 feet, the depth of the ditch is 7 feet deep and 20 feet wide. The people who built this circle took the chalk like rock produced by the excavations and built a bank within the bank where 56 holes were dug and named after the scholar John Alburey. At the entrance to the circle there were two stones that were put in place, forming a kind of entrance to the circle, as well as two more stones opposite each other. One of the main stones still standing is called the slaughter stone and is one of the entrance stones. After the construction of the inner circle there was evidence that the Neolithic people used it for another 500 years. The second area of Stonehenge is one of the most puzzling areas of Stonehenge. This area dates back to around 2100 BC. The construction of a semi-circle composed of 80 pieces of granite stone (blue stone) was made with two Heel stones at both ends. "The avenue" that led to the center of the semicircle was a path that had banks on both sides and now, in modern days, is very close to the center... of the center of paper collection areas, highways and a visitor center. Tours take place that take people around the stone and answer questions about it. Every year, during dawn on Midsummer's Eve, there are thousands of visitors circling Stonehenge just to see the sun align with the entrances. Modern druids come to ask for blessings and make offerings to their ancestors and to Stonehenge. After seeing this amazing site, visitors say they feel the tingle of electricity and magic in the air as they visit Stonehenge. As well as being one of the most visited sites in England, the construction of the stone hedge is still one of the world's greatest mysteries. The structure is strange and the stories are funny. Hopefully one day the mystery of Stonehenge will be revealed and the real story will come out, but until then it's nice to hear the different legends of Stonehenge.
