Sociological Theory Since the dawn of racism, humans have judged each other based on race and ethnicity. People's opinions based on skin color, place of origin or cultural background have caused a stratification of men and women. We now have majority and minority groups, hate groups, ethnic enclaves, segregation, income differences, and we have even experienced mass genocide in our world (Carl, 2011). All of these are direct effects of a person's race or ethnicity. All this provides humans with a struggle among themselves for various resources. Racial and ethnic stratification is an integral example of conflict theory because competition for resources takes place between people from different walks of life (Carl, 2011). In America we have a majority and many minority groups. White or non-Hispanic people constitute the majority group, while Native Hawaiians, African Americans, American Indians, Asians, and Hispanics or Latinos all constitute separate minority groups (Carl, 2011). A majority group not only holds the largest population, but also holds the most power in a society. In contrast, a minority group matters very little in the population, but holds almost no power over the majority group (Long, 2013). Here, Caucasians hold the most power, while all of our minorities possess very little. The power struggle is a great example of classical conflict theory (Carl, 2011). While everyone competes for resources, the dominant group wins the resources. The dominant group in this situation would be the majority group, or whites (Carl, 2011). Hate groups were the result of conflict between majority and minority groups (Carl, 2011). Organizations like Black Pa...... half of document ......(2013). Using conflict theory (pp. 62).
