Revivalism in Nineteenth Century America was driven primarily by the creation of churches with the separation of styles denoting religious denominations. Partly related to the Picturesque movement of the nineteenth century, the Gothic Revival style soon became a movement of nationalism. Best known for his Gothic Revival churches, Richard Upjohn quickly became a leader in the Picturesque style; particularly seen in his most notable work, Trinity Church in New York City. Similarly, H.H. Richardson applied his own style to his Trinity Church located in Boston. Upjohn and Richardson were both influenced by the architectural styles that had originated before them. These styles laid the foundation for their design aesthetic; as well as reasoning, making them influential in religious communities throughout the architectural scene that was taking place at the time in the United States. Upjohn's essays concerning the Romanesque style were part of the movement that paved the way for Richardson. Bold and generously serene, his villa designs were a premature struggle for functional expression in the picturesque; further contributing to the development of both H.H. Richardson and Louis Sullivan. Upjohn possessed many of the aspects that were unified by Richardson and further developed in many early works of modernism. Upjohn's influence for the Trinity Church design came from the ecclesiological movement, which advocated "authentic" medieval forms. His work incorporated many of the ecclesiological principles concerning the form, plan, and orientation of the church; which included: emphasis on the chancel and altar; use of natural and honest materials; and a general approach to the spirit of medieval English churches.
