Community is a broad term, but would be best described as a “feeling of companionship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests and goals.” The LGBT community is the union of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their supporters, with the aim of celebrating individuality, sexuality and diversity. Furthermore, the LGBT community actively fights for equal rights and calls for an end to discrimination based on sexual orientation. The LGBT community is made up of people of all races, socioeconomic, religious and non-religious statuses and ages. The LGBT community supports all three assumptions and in some ways questions assumptions two and three as well. While the LGBT community is accepting of many different types, according to Catherine Latterell, author of Remix, assumption 1 is that communities provide stability. It is clear that the LGBT community undoubtedly supports this statement. Organizations like the Trevor Project and GLAAD work to "amplify the voices of the LGBT community by empowering real people to share their stories." (GLAAD) According to the Trevor Project, lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth are 4 times more likely, and questioning youth are 3 times more likely, to attempt suicide than their straight peers. According to estimates from the Suicide Prevention Resource Center, between 30 and 40 percent of LGBT youth have attempted suicide. The organizations mentioned, among many others, provide members of the LGBT community with a safe place to express themselves safely and find support and assistance. The LGBT community as a whole is a place where its members can come together to celebrate each other. The LGBT community both supports and challenges this assumption. While the LGBT community provides support and help to those who may need it, it does not contribute to any of the basic needs for survival. The LGBT community itself does not provide food, water, shelter etc. However, the LGBT community provides a safe place to express themselves and find assistance in times of crisis, which many LGBT people describe as a necessity in their lives. There are countless organizations available with the purpose of serving LGBT people who may be suffering, physically, mentally, or emotionally. One of the many goals of the LGBT community is to celebrate individuality, diversity and sexuality. The LGBT community responds to these needs, as it provides a place where gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people can apologize.
