Usually differences in ethnicity, culture and religion lead to some sort of misunderstandings between people of different societies. People are usually judged based on their behavior in public spaces, which could be a result of their culture, education or social class. An article, “The Arab world” (1996), written by Edward T. Hall, an American anthropologist and writer, discusses cultural misconceptions between Americans and Arabs. The article highlights many social behaviors enacted by Arab individuals that seem strange and sometimes surprising and uncomfortable to Americans and Westerners. Additionally, Hall includes examples of numerous social behaviors that he believes constitute the theme of Arab culture along with some personal experiences that led him to conclude that it is indeed difficult for Europeans and Americans to understand Arabs. Despite the presence of some positive points, the article is very biased and biased towards Arabs, and it is clearly seen that the author has the wrong idea of Arab and Middle Eastern culture. To begin with, while some of the points mentioned in his article are valid, most of the author's thoughts are assumptions not supported by evidence, research, statistics, or even individual studies. Hall depends heavily on his limited personal experience with some Arabs, or so he thinks. He stereotypes these experiences about all Arabs and concludes that Arabs are very different from Americans and are difficult to understand easily. Hall states that the concept of privacy is not really present in Arab thought. In “The Arab World” Edward T. Hall explains his point of view by mentioning a personal experience in which he became irritated while sitting in an empty h...... middle of paper ......trusion, which is more likely the case in most civilized societies. Stopping dangerous actions in the streets is a civilized behavior that is not only adopted by Arabs, but by any individual who cares about the safety of the people in his society. All in all, I think the author has formed a negative opinion about Arabs that is far from reality. his mind through the events he experienced with some Arabs. It is completely unfair to judge the approximately 350 million Arabs who occupy 22 countries spread over 2 continents on the basis of a few personal experiences. Arab culture – just like any other culture – has negative sides as well as many positive sides. People should stop prejudging others and start learning to think deeply before making judgments.
