There is not much air on the ship because there were many slaves and there is not much air for all of them to breathe, they were all on the lower deck of the ship. The terrible Middle Passage had caused the death of all the slaves. Olaudah Equiano was born in 1745 in Eboa, Guinea, now Nigeria. He was the son of a chief, and was kidnapped into slavery at the age of 11, and was put aboard a slave ship. He described his first time when he arrived on the coast it was the sea and a slave ship. "Now I wished that the last friend, Death, would lift me up; but soon, to my grief, two of the white men offered me food; and, as I refused to eat, one of them took me by the hand, and made me pass, I think, on the winch, and he tied my feet, while the other flogged me severely" (Equiano, The Middle Passage).
