This topic is very important to the kind of place we live in now. I chose this topic to see how and why these popes changed the church to adapt it to modern society. Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II have had different impacts on the Church today. Pope John XXIII had an impact on the Church in modern society after his death with the assembly of Vatican II. Pope John Paul II went into the world to change and embrace it. He had a direct impact on the world by going into the world. Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII were both very good at what they did and both had different ways of doing it. Both were great leaders and needed to follow Lowney's four pillars of leadership to become as good a leader as them. The four pillars are: understanding your strengths, weaknesses, values and worldview, innovating and adapting confidently to embrace a changing world, engaging others in a positive and loving attitude, and energizing yourself and to others with heroic ambition. It is these pillars that separate a good leader from a great leader. In the essay I will cover their background, leadership style, achievements as Pope, and impact on the Church in the 20th century. Pope John Paul II was one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century. Pope John Paul II had a difficult life growing up. At the age of 20 he was the only one left alive in his family. He also lived in Poland during the Nazi occupation of Poland. These events led him to be a great and very strong leader. He was not a shy leader who very often expressed his opinion about his beliefs. His motto “Totally Yours” shows that he was a very open person. While he was Pope he maintained firm Orthodox positions. Pope John Paul II did many things to influence the Catholic Church in the 20th century. He... middle of paper... aul II had a different way of leading, he was strong and expressed his opinion on issues involving the world and the church. Pope John XXIII failed to see its impact on the Church. He began to kick off the movement by invoking Vatican II. Unlike Pope John XXIII, Pope John Paul II had a direct impact on the Church by going into the world and seeing the impact he had on it. Both ways of their very different leadership styles worked because they both followed Lowney's four pillars: understanding one's strengths, weaknesses, values and worldview, innovating and adapting confidently to embrace a changing world, engaging others in a positive and loving attitude and energize oneself and others with heroic ambition. These four pillars have ensured that both of these leaders are remembered as among the best, which is why they will be canonized by Pope Francis on April 27 this year.
