Topic > Gender Inequality and Media Objectification: A Feminist…

When I asked people around me what they thought of these commercials, I was very surprised by the answers I received. The most popular response as to why this was an acceptable form of promoting something was "Well, that's just how they do it." or “Sex sells,” but I still couldn't understand what the media was portraying to women. I felt like I was the only one who found these ads abnormal, and that was it. Everyone I asked about these ads never questioned why they might be wrong and looked at them positively because they fit the demographic these ads are made for: the average, straight, cisgender male. And that's exactly the problem. As soon as men accept the objectification of women as their reality, it becomes completely normal. Over time this promotes the regression of women's rights and promotes rape culture. Due to the fact that these advertisements show women as mere objects of desire created for the pleasure of men, this highlights the second idea in rape culture, that women are treated as objects of masculinity among others.
