I have always found the ocean to be a very intriguing part of the Earth. There are endless discoveries yet to be made about it. My fascination with the ocean gave me the idea of writing a term paper on hurricanes and what they are and their effects. I remember hearing about all the damage Hurricane Katrina caused after it hit the coast near New Orleans. The only information I really know about them is what is briefly covered in the news. I thought it would be interesting to find out the true effects they can have not only on the people who endure them, but also on the environment that is torn apart by the plethora of winds and water. What I Know Most of my knowledge about hurricanes has come from Hurricane Katrina and the devastation I saw portrayed on the news. My other source comes from a family friend who lives in Florida and who has had to endure a hurricane or two. Hurricanes are extraordinary at inflicting pain, poverty, filth, and disease on communities. They are a great way to spread pollution with all the debris. With all the homes, vehicles and other huge items swept away by hurricanes, it's easy for them to be ruined and then dumped miles away. Hurricanes not only transport man-made materials from here to there, but also transport plants or animals from the ocean to land. Flooded streets could become the new home of poisonous snakes, dangerous fish or sharks. There are endless possibilities of getting bitten, drowning, or going undetected. Hurricanes are brutal and violent natural disasters to endure and in many cases can be deadly. What I want to find out I would like to find more in-depth information about the effects hurricanes cause on society.
