Fort Leonard Wood is the home of the Chemical Corps and is also the home of the Chemical Defense Training Center (CDTF). Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, DOD civilians and soldiers from allied nations come to train at CDTF Fort Leonard Wood. In the Army, in order for a Soldier to complete their Military Occupational Chemical Specialty (MOS), they must successfully complete the CDTF. When you become a Petty Officer or Officer, you will need to return to the Advanced Leaders Course (ALC), Senior Leaders Course (SLC), Basic Leaders Course (BOLC) or Chemical Captain Career Course (CCC) as this is a requirement established by the Department of Defense (Annual Report to Congress on the Unknown Chemical and Biological Defense Program (2000), 2001). Prior to the construction of the CDTF, Soldiers had received live toxic training, but it had to be conducted outdoors as it was the most effective training. Since 1973, the use of live chemical training has been discontinued due to environmental concerns and low safety standards (Unknown, 2011). In 1981 the US Army Chemical School (USACMLS) designed and developed a training facility to be used indoors and safer for the environment and soldiers. The new training facility cost $14.9 million to build and was finished in 1986 at Fort McClellan, Alabama. Thus began the chemical era (Unknown, 2011) Soldiers they can be confident that their equipment is more than capable of protecting them from a chemical attack.
