O., & Burke, P.J. (2009). Lost in the confusion: Homeless teen culture. Pediatric Nursing, 35(3), 154-161. This source is an ethnographic study to explore the culture of homelessness in youth. Data for the study were obtained from nineteen homeless adolescents from the northeastern part of the United States. Oliveira and Burke (2009) identified some of the cultural characteristics of homeless youth, including material possessions such as musical instruments and equipment, relationships with other homeless people to create a street family, drug selling and panhandling, as well as street language. They found that the decision to make the street their home was a rational option for remaining in unsafe and harmful home environments. This study provides insight into the culture of homelessness. This source is relevant to the topic of homeless space and culture because it provides information on the factors that push homeless young people to choose the street as a space and home, and information on homeless culture. This source provides information from the perspective of the homeless. Sheehan, R. (2010).
