The movie The Maltese Falcon is about a private investigator who is trying to unravel the mystery surrounding a black enamelled bird known as the Maltese Falcon. Samuel Spade, the protagonist of the story, is what was known as a “hard-boiled” detective. Men like them rarely show a soft side (if they have one). Likewise, they are physically tough and often resort to guns or fists to get what they want. Furthermore, they tend to be amoral, but with their own inflexible code of honor. The first element of the hard-boiled detective's personality is the fact that they rarely show an affectionate side. Throughout the entire film, Sam Spade acts distracted and casual. Nothing bothers him and he doesn't seem to care about anyone. He remains cool, collected and a little detached. He treats Brigit's wife and Miles brutally and uses them for his own purposes. After Miles's death, he avoids Mrs. Archer, even though he had previously made professions of love to her. That said, he shows some tenderness towards Brigit, but is overwhelmed by the desire to exonerate himself...
