Caffeine is the most abused drug in the world. Many people wake up and start their day with some sort of caffeine. Some are to increase energy and help you stay awake and focused. Others are for addictive craving. It is the most popular drug in the United States. Caffeine is present in almost everything, such as carbonated drinks, over-the-counter drugs, prescription drugs, cigarettes, foods, etc. The most consumed sources of caffeine are coffee and tea, and [caffeine] can be harmful to your health, as well as addictive. America should be aware of the causes and effects caffeine has on the human body, which can lead to addiction and negative side effects. Coffee and tea have been used by humans for many years. Such beverages are the primary source of caffeine intake by humans. Coffee and tea date back to the dawn of human history. A Greek poet Homer, who lived in the 9th-8th century BC, spoke of a drink that helped to stay awake; biographers believed he was referring to tea. In the past, coffee was very popular in the Middle East and North Africa. While tea is believed to have developed in China, coffee was brought to other countries by travellers. Many religious people disapproved of it, claiming that caffeine was an “instrument of evil.” In 1900 there was a doctor named T.D. Crothers, who said caffeine was harmful and rarely caused violent and destructive behavior. Crothers also spoke of a Civil War general who drank several cups of coffee and then came to the front acting recklessly, shouting, waving his hat, and giving orders, as if he were confused.
