Education, we hear this word quite often, but what does it mean? Miriam Webster's Dictionary defines education as “the knowledge and development resulting from an educational process.” Everyone needs a little education to be successful in life. The amount and types of education may vary, but we all need the basics of reading, writing, and math to be successful in life and professional in the workplace. I see education as a step towards future success. Education ideally translates into effective communication and a successful professional life. We have alternative ways of learning and new things to learn thanks to technology. We must be educated to communicate professionally. Mr. Kohn states in the article that his wife is a successful and well-educated doctor, but that she tends to have difficulty with correct grammar. Even though he's probably an amazing doctor, it can sometimes seem careless when someone in a position of authority makes simple grammatical errors during a conversation. These little grammatical errors may seem trivial, and everyone makes mistakes from time to time. Even so, numerous small errors can be very distracting to those who are trying to listen. Everyone needs to learn English (or their country's language) to be professional. Society needs people who are successful in what they do because of their education. From doctors to teachers, from secretaries to plumbers, we see different levels of education and different types of education, but they are all professions that society needs to function properly. All these people are educated in the sense that they know how to do their jobs. Kohn points out that “It would be a mistake to reduce education to vocational preparation, if only because… middle of the paper… skills provide a starting point for higher education or other training. In conclusion, I think we should replace Mr. Kohn's question "What does it mean to be well educated?" with a more specific question “Are we teaching the right things, to the right people, in the right way?” I'm still a student and have a lot to learn, but as I navigate life after college, I really hope to continue learning and be able to share what I know with others. I like the Webster's Dictionary definition of education as “the knowledge and development resulting from an educational process.” It seems like a vague definition, but I think it's very appropriate. The word "educational process" makes me think more of training than of school. I believe the main goal of education should be to train us for the life ahead of us, which means fifty years or five minutes.
