“No kind of political, religious or racial demonstration or propaganda is permitted in any Olympic site, place or other area” (Advertising, demonstrations, propaganda* 98). This rule shows just what the Germans hoped for, a peaceful, passive, war-free environment in which countries can unite and compete. Even though we all know that at the 1972 Munich Olympics, between 5 and 6 September, a real antithesis occurred. The Munich massacre, one of the worst massacres of all time, was provoked by the revenge of the Palestinian group known as Black September, against the Israeli people, or, more importantly, against their Olympic team (Rosenberg). Since the conflict between Palestine and Israel has been going on for so long, conflict was eventually inevitable. Or was it? The 1972 Munich Olympics tragedy shocked the world with the murder of the Israeli Olympic team, but the fact that it could have been prevented is completely unacceptable. Tensions were very high during these Olympics, especially because they were the first Olympics to be held in Germany since the Nazis hosted the Games in 1936 (Rosenberg). Although for some it would never be easy to forget the recent and, frankly, horrible past. The Olympic Park had been built just six miles from Dachau concentration camp, one of the largest concentration camps to ever exist (Burnton). For all 42 representatives of Israel, these Olympics had a deeper meaning than anyone else. Israeli citizens, many of them Holocaust survivors or their children, were returning to Germany.
