The end of the Vietnam War was not the end of the issues the war raised in the United States. The 1970s were a time of violence and mistrust of government. The Watergate scandal was the height of government speculation and ended with the impeachment of President Nixon. This distrust has spilled over into the current state of American society and politics, where people feel constantly lied to and deceived by government officials. Furthermore, there is a huge divide between those who are for or against government intervention in other countries. Public support for operations in the Middle East is divided, just as during the middle years of the Vietnam War. One can only speculate whether public opinion and the government will unite around a position as the Americans did during Vietnam
