Speech apraxiaSpeech apraxia is a well-known disease among children around the world. There are many stories out there about children who suffer from apraxia of speech and manage to overcome it. The story of a girl named Big Sister inspired me and made me want to learn more about apraxia. According to “This Simple Home” a little girl named Big Sister showed the first signs of apraxia but no one wanted to believe it. She was always such a happy baby but she didn't babble or make any sounds. He had no throat signals, the only sound was mmm-mmm while eating, which didn't start until he was five years old. But she laughed, giggled and cried. They started teaching her sign language so she could communicate around age two and the people around them thought they were crazy for it. Around fifteen months, their pediatrician encouraged them to have a hearing and speech evaluation. From there they began therapy. He had a speech-language pathologist (SLP) and by his second birthday he had a couple of word approximations. Then from there it started to improve. (Annette, 2012) According to "The Mayo Clinic" childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a rare speech disorder in which a child has difficulty making accurate movements when speaking. Childhood apraxia of speech is just a label for a speech disorder. In order for a child to speak correctly, the brain must learn to make plans that tell the speech muscles how to move the lips, jaw, and tongue so that those sounds and words can come out and be accurate. When a child suffers from childhood apraxia of speech, the brain struggles to develop those movements. The muscles aren't weak, they just don't work...... middle of paper......tp://www.thissimplehome.com/2012/08/my-daughters-story-overcoming-verbal. htmlChannel for better health. (2014, February 17).
