This place is where General Andrew Jackson, local volunteers and the pirate Jean Lafitte along with his men defended the city from the invasion of the English. This history alone is the very foundation of how New Orleans became something like this. Yet there's one thing you can never forget when talking about the heartbeat of New Orleans. Originating in New Orleans, jazz music was quite important. Created in the 19th century, people at the time called jazz music “voodoo rhythms.” The only place in the New World where drums were allowed, Voodoo rituals were openly accepted and attended by people from all walks of life, rich or poor, black or white, this was one thing that united the people of New Orleans.
